Oenophilia
I like wine, and over the past couple of years, I've become more and more interested in it. We have a great local wine shop, Inari Wines, owned by a friendly couple who are very knowledgeable about wine and always happy to share what they know.I've had an account on corkd.com almost since the site launched, which has been very helpful for keeping track of wines that Ben and I try that we like or don't like. It's through cork'd that we recently discovered Wine Library TV, a really awesome video podcast about wine.
Anyway, all these things have sort of informed my interest in wines. Recently I've finally begun actually reading some books and learning more about wine (not grape-growing methods or anything super technical, but practical stuff like how to properly store wine, what wines pair with what foods, things like that), and Ben and I are planning our wine cellar.
That sounds really hoity-toity and snooty, but we're actually just going to buy a wine rack and stock it up. It's actually a pretty practical idea. For one thing, you save money (usually about 10%) when you buy wine by the case (and most shops will let you buy mixed cases, so you don't have to buy all one thing). You also save time and gas because you're not running to the store every time you decide you want wine with dinner.
I'm really excited about it. I had a great experience last week at Inari, actually. I had finished my first couple of books about wine, both of which were really great. When we went in to pick out a couple of wines, it was like the world opened up. I am certainly by no means an expert, but a lot of things I was reading on the bottles (particularly of European wines in French and German) actually meant something to me. It was great to feel like I understood things a better than before.
So that's my new hobby. The other thing I'm really into now (aside from work-related interests) is yoga. But I'll save that for another entry.
For anyone who's curious, here's yesterday's episode of WLTV:
