Micro-blogging
I recently opened a Twitter account, and so far I'm kind of digging it. Twitter allows you to post updates about where you are, what you're doing, etc. via the Twitter website, IM, SMS, or one of a number of third-party Twittering softwares. When you add people to your friends list, you can choose to "follow" them (meaning you receive their updates via SMS, IM, or whatever other method you choose), and you can send direct responses to friends' updates, without actually knowing their mobile numbers, etc. It's called "micro-blogging." Updates, or "tweets," are limited to 140 characters (around text message length), so you're forced to be pretty concise. If you need to include a link, you can use Ma.gnolia.com or TinyURL.com to shorten it, if necessary.
So far, I'm kind of digging it. Sometimes, it can tend toward the mundane, but it's pretty cool to be able to keep up with what your friends are up to, and it's neat to be able to just shoot off a tweet when you see a crazy bumper sticker in traffic or whatever, that you might otherwise forget.
Got a Twitter account? I'm on Twitter at http://twitter.com/cammycat, and Ben is http://twitter.com/bswihart.
Or visit the Twitter website to sign up.
