Memorial Day Weekend
We had a nice 3 day weekend for Memorial Day. Saturday was a lot of fun because we took Gannon to Bay's Mountain Park as a reward for improved behavior in class. Later, our friend Paul came over and we grilled out buffalo burgers and launched fireworks and Hell yes.I suppose Memorial Day for me means something somber, although I'm not the military type. My family has quite a history in World War II and my aunt is a high ranking officer at the Pentagon. It's disheartening that war exists at all, but it does and that's the way life is. I think it's time to bring our soldiers home from Iraq.
While at the park, we saw a family dressed in matching gaudy shirts that looked like they were made from the American flag. They were rude, overweight, and let their unruly 10-year-old child throw sticks at the deer. For a moment, I felt like this was some form of abuse of our flag... like worse than burning it. One of our latest clients makes flagpoles and this has resulted in more heightened observance of flags and their flagpoles. I guess I'm not overly emotional about our flag, but it bums me out when I see one all torn up and neglected, especially at a place of business or someplace that could afford to fix it but just doesn't care to.
I've never fought for our country nor will I likely ever. I like to imagine that I exist however because of my ancestors who did. War is and those who are harmed by it deserve to be remembered. They also deserve to have a voice about which wars are worth fighting for.
